WELCOME TO FLORENCE CRUSHED STONE

The Florence no. 1 marble quarry (also known as the Hogback quarry) opened in the early 1900's and was operated by the Vermont Marble Company. In the early 1990's, Omya, a Swiss company, reopened the quarry and began extracting the calcium carbonate necessary for the production of paper, paint and plastics. The quarry is still used for its calcium carbonate deposits as well as the dolomitic marble which lays on top of the calcium carbonate. The dolomitic marble is used in asphalt, road building and manufactured sand.
